Specifying the Sitemap location in your robots.txt file

You can specify the location of the Sitemap using a robots.txt file. To do this, simply add the following line:

Sitemap: <sitemap_location>

The <sitemap_location> should be the complete URL to the Sitemap, such as: http://www.example.com/sitemap.xml

This directive is independent of the user-agent line, so it doesn't matter where you place it in your file. If you have a Sitemap index file, you can include the location of just that file. You don't need to list each individual Sitemap listed in the index file.

Hopefully this will help with the as of yet useless MSN.

This is new by the way so search engine implementation will occur as they get on board. Use it to get in early but I would still submit to your google webmaster page and yahoo.

You can also ping Ask.com at Ask.com Sitemap submission URL of your sitemap here.xml.

According to sitemaps.org, all the search engines should support similar ping urls soon.

I bookmarked that page - I'm going to have to read it several more times, but that looks like an excellent resource.

Thank You!

Much thanks for this. I'm listed enough on google and yahoo, but getting listed on msn has been very difficult although what maybe 5% of peple actually uses it. Hope this helps.

Another suggestion from a sitemap perspective is the VBSEO SiteMap add-on:

vBulletin Search Engine Optimization Forums

Today they notify Google and Yahoo via ping automatically, hopefully in the next version they will include the ability to add additional services similar to how the VBSEO ping configuration is set up.
