A default icon is a option setting in vBulletin. I posted a tutorial here somewhere on how to turn it off. Find that and go backwards.

Change The Show Default Post Icon Setting in vBulletin

I actually thought there was a setting and even looked in the vbulletin manual over on vbulletin.com, but nothing!!
