How can I read the first post into a variable

Hello all, I am looking to make a little mod for my forum that will read the first post of the thread, and use that as the meta description tag. I figured the easiest way is to just query the first post into a variable and use it as the description tag content, unfortunately I don't know how to do this. Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you added vBSEO to your forums it would do this and so much more.

Well ya, but I already have the majority of the vbseo features which I coded myself or found free mods for. I would rather not pay the $150+ it is for that software.
