DB Backup

Hey CM,

Wondering exactly how you and the others backup your database. Whether you just use phpMyadmin or what.

My old server used to have a great script for backing up the database gzipped.

Seen lots of tutorials around, but thought it would be good to discuss here too and get our members opinions. Especially since I know a couple others are using FluidHosting.

Cheers,
G_Man

Send a message via ICQ to Eric Send a message via MSN to Eric
I don't bother to BU the db alone, since I run cpanel server I just use admin backup tool and send it to a backup server as account does so each nght automatically btw...
The internal BU tool in admincp is nice too for a quick db drop...
if needed I can always extract it from there but never had to since about 3 years now.

But shhhhhh Murphy might be near so let's whisper....

I do it from root level and just back it up with text commands.

This is only available to people like cm that have a Vertual Private Server or Dedicated Server. If you have normal hosting your most likely not able to because it requires Shell/SSH access.

My box is next door to Code Monkey's. I just don't know what all the neat buttons do or the pretty lights mean.

No worries. Not going to offend me. I don't know enough to be offended!

I am selfproclaimed the world's most ignorant Admin. Will get it all sorted one of these days.

Guess I'll have to wait for the bossman to school me again.

Cheers.

Code Monkey is really good isn't he lol.
Back to the topic. I learned the hard way that you always need to have backups and even a backup of your backup. I created a very nice vBulletin skin and was working on removing an old db and deleted the wronk one thatnks to the design of cPanel's MySQL manager (not phpMyAdmin the page to create and remove dbs). and I didn't have a backup so I had to re upload vBulletin and reinstall it. Since then I have decided to backup everything to my godaddy server.

I'll right something up later. But there are automated solutions out there as well.

Jay, G_man just moved to a VPS at my host so you'll have to excuse him if he is still giddy and jumping for joy.
