Question Forgive my ignorance,

as I'm brand new here. Not a coder, but I enjoy playing with simple MODS/HACKS. On vBulletin.org (how I learned of this site) they have a standard page telling you what all is involved with hacks.(i.e. template edits, etc) For those of us who know so little about such things it's important I understand what I'm getting into before I 'leap' into installing a MOD.

As such, I don't seem to be able to find that information on your site...yet anyway. Am I just not looking in the right place, or do you have to subscribe before you're allowed to read that information?

I ask, because I'd like to subscribe if the MODs are not too difficult to install, but if you have to be a coder to pull some of them off then it's w-a-y out of my league.

Thanxx, A.D.

P.S.
I ended up here after tripping across some thread on vBulletin.org that had been closed wherein they were talking about some sort of REGISTERATION MOD. Someone had a link to another website, and that website had a link to here!

Welcome to Vbmodder,

The hacks from CM (Code Monkey) are not hard to install at all, mostly it is uploading a little file in plugins and maybe a few things in a template, but it is really basic. This site isn't very old yet and CM is still working hard on all parts to implement all that is needed. For sure he'll pay attention to your remark.

And if you ever have problems with some mod/hack, he'll be more then willing to help you out, and for sure some others here will do the same if within our possibilities.

The only difficult mod I have is Articlbot. And that is because of the complex nature of RSS and the fact that providers like to deviate from the standards so issues are endless.

The registration mod merely requires a few template edits and product install.

The rest are just pruduct install. Well, vBWeather just needs one line added to a template.

Simple stuff. I don't release code modifications so no need to modify the php or any of that.

If I displayed much detail on install procedures to the public I would be showing half of how the mod works. We do have a section on what's available though that needs some work.

http://vbmodder.com/forums/f17/

Little by little I get the place swept up. I have been doing a lot of paid installs of VBSEO and vBulletin lately so I haven't had much time. I even had to defer a vBulletin upgrade to another coder.

That's preposterous!!!

Actually, this is one reason I am looking at your stuff, CM. I've seen your mods elsewhere and yours and few select others on vborg, etc, keep edits to a minimum. I am not so much lazy, as just not in the mood to edit 20 templates in 4 or 5 styles everytime vBulletin gets a wild hair and adds a .1

Now I just need to come up with someway to contribute (presumably by posting) and help you get this forum moving!

I always try to find an automated way to do the templates. It's not always possible but it is more than many think. This is actually the rift that caused me to move on from vBORG. Some powers that be that like to throw their weight around think I am doing you a disservice by not making you edite 40 million lines of code. It seems I am not teaching you how to code so the community is bound to die off soon.

Some like to dream of days gone by when the PHP community was filled with tinkerers and coders only. Those days are gone. It's mainstream now and filled with consumers who don't have any interest in the inner workings. They just want stuff that's cool and works.

There will always be plenty of tinkerers and such to keep the code flowing.

I think there is both. I do believe that is what Sir Adrian was on about over on vbhackers. I think a forum can easily support both.

Case in point - I often want to tweak Mods just a bit more for MY forum and have to do some learning in order to do it.

Seems to me I remember that thread about Mods and Edits you are referring to... I just kind of 'kept moving' so to speak!!

If it was only coding and hacking, then most mods wouldn't even spread much. Most are not keen and don't want to spend hours on a thing, more the drag and drop and there we go...
And you'll always have coders around to make this possible, since the drag and drop situation means a lot of code underneath to make this happen. And the pure coders will most probably as said just go tweak a few things extra
But at least thanks to the nutty coders we have some nice tools to fool with.

You're exactly right, while I enjoy coding and the feeling of accomplishment after adding in a new mod, sometimes I just want it done, and I don't wanna have to deal with screwing something up.

well, let's start from fresh again,

Start a new thread in the appropriate support forum, tell us what you did already and or understood and where you're stuck. For sure you'll get it. It is also clear that templates are not always properly coded and thus from time to time you have to figure out what you need to find. Not as easy depending on the template. One I use on my forum is way not following the 'rules' and each time I need to go read some to find the solution. And each time CM helped me out as he did for others.
So jump over to the correct forum and post there from fresh with the minimum info we need to figure out where you are stuck

That's good, because that's what my knowledge of coding is... very basic. I know just enough to be dangerous!
