About This Page: This is a discussion on So who is upgrading to vBulletin 3.7 Gold when it comes out? within the General Chat forums, part of the Community Center category, at vBulletin Modification Discussions. Anyone? I'm not sure I need any of the new features in vBulletin 3.7 but I will probably set up a test site. You should always wait for the first patch anyway.

Oh wow up to 3.7 Gold!! I'm still using 3.6.4

I guess i'm the kind that follows the 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it' rule.

I'm interested in finding out about it though. Maybe thats the upgrade i need, i don't like upgrading too much so thats why i'm still kinda 'old skool' LOL

me! im trying to be patient for gold to be released. the days seem to drag on for weeks. theres alot of custom coding i want to have done to the board and ive been putting it off until 3.7 goes gold. ive got RC2 installed on the test board and i really like what i see. the biggest thing the users will notice is the enhanced profiles and the albums built right in. ive been using the image host addon, but the albums that are built in will be replacing that.

You've got that right about betas!!! I upgraded to 3.7.0 RC3 and everything was fine - then the RC4 came out and I stupidly upgraded to that. This new "security token" thing has played havoc with my site - I've spent probably close to 24 hours fixing things up in the past few days

AARRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!

Re: So who is upgrading to vBulletin 3.7 Gold when it comes out?

I've put the Gold release on my test board to have a play and get familiar with it before migrating onto main forum.

Also need to convert the skin to work as it's a 3.6.x only style. I'm getting there...

Re: So who is upgrading to vBulletin 3.7 Gold when it comes out?

I'm nervous about upgrading myself. I have installed quite a few mods and being a n00b at vBulletin I'm not sure if I can fix some of then if they break and I'm sure some will but it looks so promising. Going to keep reading up and following the talk until I'm comfortable enough to make the move.

Can you set up a test site with a single vBulletin license, and if so where can I find instructions on how to go about it?

Every license allows you to set up a test site. I believe it needs to be in a directory called testvb and of course it can't be used as forum and it must be secured from access. Just secure the directory for password access.

It's simple. Just upload another copy of the files to the testvb directory and create a new database for the test site.

I will probably copy my site and do a test upgrade to play around with, but will be waiting until all the hacks I use become available before upgrading...

Re: So who is upgrading to vBulletin 3.7 Gold when it comes out?

I did it on one of my sites and it pretty much flopped. No one is interested in the profile bit and those that are find it cumbersome and not intuitive. Frankly I think they are several years too late for profiles and 10 years too late for blogs. That's stuff you can get elsewhere for free and more feature rich. Put it this way, I am having a design your profile contest and there are two entries. And I am giving away guaranteed closed beta keys to a game they have all been waiting 8 years for. So if that doesn't tell you how boring the new features are then I don't know what will.

I won't even get into how inefficient the code is.

Re: So who is upgrading to vBulletin 3.7 Gold when it comes out?

I thought that the April 29th announcement "vBulletin 3.7.0 'Gold' Released" meant that it is already released.

Am I missing something?

I also noticed that some recommend waiting for at least one release following 'Gold' before installing.

With the price increases coming (June 2nd?) would you still wait if you were a new buyer?

I have found exactly the same thing, and I've been running 3.7 since beta 2 in january.

New profiles : Nobody cares, they just complain that things that used to take one click now take two or even three.

Social groups: Not used at all bar the two test groups we set up.

Blogs: Used about once every two months, and nobody reads them. This despite me having "latest 5 blogs" on forumhome and getdaily/getnew.

Albums: we already had Photoplog running and that's not popular. The albums are just a source of UTTER confusion, nobody knows how to use them at all, even I struggle.

Friends system: Had loads of requests to "opt out" of that, so many that I created a usergroup with it disabled. Again, nobody uses it.

3.7 is like the emperor's new clothes. Everyone says it's wonderful but I've yet to see a board where the new features are used properly and not just seen as a silly gimmick. It's been universally derided on my site, and I can't see the point.

Re: So who is upgrading to vBulletin 3.7 Gold when it comes out?

I suppose if you had a teen social board then yeah, it might fly. But I think it's too late. Maybe if it was real feature rich with hooks to other social sites then it might fly. I'm surprised they didn't learn from Zoints.

I should add that I like the OOP part of the profile code as it makes it easier to add things. I just don't like all the queries to the database. It is quite high by default. And anything you add other than single item user data adds more queries. I imagine there will be profile pages with over 100 queries eventually the way some sites go crazy with stuff. I would like to see a cache system in place for block data to cut down on the queries.
