If you cannot afford $160 for an owned license you're best bet is to buy an leased license for $85 this allows you to run vBulletin for 1 year. That's how I started out, it at least gives you time to decide if its worth buying a full license.

That works but then you will need to purchase the who thing. So it gives you an opportunity to test it out but it can cost you more in the long run if you wait to long to upgrade.
