Great stuff.

I would purchase vbseo but my forum is only online because it's primarly a hobby. Personally, I think my forum is doing quite well considering I haven't used any type of Search Engine Optimization.

Yah you're right, right now I'm having problems with my forum links. They're all giving me 404 errors.

I also tried the mod_rewrite option but that didn't work either

I've opened a support ticket with them, I feel kinda bad for wasting their time if it's something stupid I didn't think of

You can also make a post here in the vBulletin Modifications forum and layout the steps you took and we can give you some pointers. I have done many paid installs of VBSEO and so has Loco so some of us know a thing or too. Plus many of our members have installed it and may have a similar setup as you.
